Top 3 Reasons your Resume isn’t Getting you Selected for the Interview

When evaluating each resume that comes across my desk, I find that my clients are commonly making at least 2 of these 3 mistakes. In other words, on an average, for each resume that I review, 66% of the document is formatted incorrectly, which is preventing candidates from getting noticed by decision makers. Here are 3 key reasons your resume isn’t getting selected for interviews:

  1. You do not have Proper Keywords:

In order to compete in today’s competitive market, your resume must be set up for AI (artificial intelligence) matches. When you apply for a job and submit your resume, a computer will take the job description from the company, and select the best candidate matches based on keywords. Without key industry buzz words, companies aren’t even seeing your resume because computers aren’t finding you as a match.

  2. It is not Accomplishment Based:

Gone are the days of chronological/task based resumes. Task based resume formats are outdated and just do not compete in today’s market. When you list job tasks instead of accomplishments on your resume, you fail to stand out among the masses. A well-written, competitive resume includes quantifiable accomplishments which show the positive impact you’ve had on your past organizations, and help decision makers see why you would be a strong asset to their team as well.

  3. It is Too Text Heavy:

Text heavy resumes are confusing, overwhelming, and daunting to decision makers. When recruiters and HR professionals come across a resume bogged down with heavy text, they aren’t going to dedicate the time struggling and trying to “figure it out”. They will simply move onto the next candidate within 60 seconds. A resume with whitespace is simpler, cleaner, and more organized. White balance is attractive to decision makers and is easier to identify accomplishments and skills that make you stand out.
